More answersHow many questions are on the California DMV knowledge test?
The current California DMV learner-permit page publishes an 80% passing score without guaranteeing one question count for every applicant. Prepare with the official handbook and Class C sample tests, and follow the format presented for your application. An app mock-test length does not establish the official exam length.
What score do I need to pass?
California DMV publishes an 80% passing score for the learner-permit knowledge test. Check the instructions for the test format you receive.
Can I take the California knowledge test in Chinese or Spanish?
Yes. California offers the knowledge test in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Chinese. The handbook itself is also published in several languages, including English, Spanish, and Chinese. Ask for your language when you start the application or when you arrive at the office — availability can vary by location and format (touchscreen, audio, or paper).
How old do I need to be to get a California instruction permit?
You can apply at 15½. From ages 15½–17½, provide proof of completed driver education or enrollment in an approved integrated driver education/training program. If you are over 17½ but under 18, you can get a permit without those certificates, but must wait until 18 for the driving test. Adults 18+ do not need teen driver education. A permit does not allow solo driving. Follow the supervision and instructor-validation restrictions printed on your permit.
Which California driving rules should I study?
Study the California handbook’s rules for sharing the road with motorcycles, phone use, HOV/carpool lanes, and pedestrian and bicycle right-of-way, along with the rest of the handbook. Lane splitting is legal in California; check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles and give them room.
Is CA Driver free? Does it replace the official handbook?
This website is free. CA Driver is free to download and includes offline practice, some free explanations, and 5 free mock tests. Membership removes ads and unlocks all explanations and related handbook links, plus unlimited mock tests. Handbook downloads need internet access. Use California Driver Handbook for the rules and requirements; the app is an independent study tool.
