California DMV test: 10 rules to review
Review California signals, right-of-way, markings and practice methods with official handbook references.
By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study
Use these ten points to review California passenger-car permit rules. For each one, explain what the driver must do and which conditions change the answer.
Ten points to explain before test day
- Passing requirements. The knowledge test uses multiple-choice questions based on the California Driver’s Handbook. The passing score is 80%.
- Circular red versus red arrow. A permitted right turn on circular red requires stopping and yielding; a red arrow prohibits the turn until green. See the signal guide.
- Flashing red versus yellow. Flashing red requires a stop; flashing yellow calls for slowing and caution. Learn the different actions, not just the colors.
- Uncontrolled intersections. Without STOP or YIELD signs, the first vehicle to arrive has priority; simultaneous arrivals yield to the road user on the right. At an uncontrolled T intersection, yield to traffic and pedestrians on the through road.
- Left turns. Yield to dangerous approaching traffic and crossing pedestrians; a circular green is not automatically a protected turn.
- Roundabouts. Entering drivers yield to traffic already circulating. Check signs, lane choice and pedestrians.
- Lane markings. Yellow generally separates opposing traffic; white separates same-direction lanes. Double solid white lines prohibit crossing for a lane change.
- Blind spots. Check mirrors and look over the appropriate shoulder before moving. Mirrors alone do not cover every area.
- School buses. For flashing red bus lights, stop from either direction until children are safely across and the lights stop flashing. You need not stop if the bus is on the other side of a divided highway or a multilane highway with at least two lanes in each direction.
- Test attempts. Three knowledge-test attempts are allowed before reapplication. Minors wait seven days after a failed knowledge test, excluding the failure day.
Turn the list into a review session
Choose an uncertain topic, read the official paragraph, then explain a new example without notes. Use CA Driver to practice and a mistake log to decide what to revisit. Practice does not guarantee a pass.
