What to bring to the California DMV for your first licenseQué llevar al DMV de California para tu primera licencia加州第一次考驾照,去 DMV 要带什么

Identity, Social Security number, California residency, the application, vision, and the knowledge test — plus the REAL ID extra that sends people home.

A California knowledge-test appointment is easy to waste. You can know every right-of-way rule and still be turned away because a photocopy is not an identity document, or because you brought one residency proof when you asked for a REAL ID.

This is a study-aid checklist for a first Class C license or instruction permit. Confirm every item on dmv.ca.gov before you go. Lists and fees change.

1. An appointment, if you can get one. Walk-in windows exist, but first-time applicants who also need a vision check and a knowledge test should not gamble on a long lobby. Book through the DMV site. Tests are not given within about 30 minutes of closing.

2. Proof of identity — original or certified, not a photocopy. Typical documents are a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a certified U.S. birth certificate with a raised or embossed seal (not the hospital souvenir), a Permanent Resident Card, or a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship. Your current legal name must match the identity document. If it does not, bring the marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order that connects the names.

3. Your Social Security number. California usually verifies the number electronically. You still need to provide it on the application if you are eligible. Do not assume a screenshot of an old W-2 is the official rule — check the current identity and REAL ID document lists on the DMV site.

4. California residency — this is where REAL ID bites. A standard (federal non-compliant) card typically needs proof that you live in California. A REAL ID card needs two different residency documents showing your physical address. Two bills from the same account are not two documents. A P.O. Box is a mailing address, not a substitute for a street address. Print the papers; a phone screen is a common rejection.

5. The application and the fee. Start the Driver License / ID application online when you can (often called DL 44 / eDL 44). The knowledge test is part of the original application, not a separate ticket. The fee is nonrefundable and the file is valid for 12 months. Dollar amounts change — look them up the morning you go. Each application includes three tries at each required knowledge test.

6. Vision, photo, and thumbprint. The office will screen your vision, scan a thumbprint, and take a photo. Bring any corrective lenses you actually drive with.

Under 18. Add a parent or guardian signature and finish driver education before the permit. Earliest instruction permit is 15 years and 6 months. Fail the knowledge test and you wait seven days, not counting the day you failed. See the permit timeline.

On test day. Adults commonly see a 36-question paper and need 30 correct. Applicants under 18 commonly see 46 questions and need 38 correct. The published passing score is 80%. You can take the test in more than 35 languages, including Spanish and Chinese. Practice the California-only items — lane splitting, the no-touch phone law, HOV lanes — in CA Driver, then confirm the handbook on dmv.ca.gov.

出发前每一项都到 dmv.ca.gov 核对。

邮箱(P.O.
