California permit timeline — age, hours, and the 7-day retake

15½ for the permit, three knowledge-test attempts, a seven-day wait for minors, then supervised hours before the drive test.

By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study

For a first California Class C license, plan the permit, training and test dates together. The DMV permit requirements and handbook application steps set different paths for minors and adults.

From age 15½: apply for the permit

For the usual teen path, bring proof of completed driver education or enrollment and participation in an approved integrated driver education/driver training program. A parent or guardian must sign; both must sign if they share joint custody. Complete the application, documents, fee, vision test and knowledge test.

The permit does not authorize solo driving. For the teen training path, it becomes valid for practice when you begin behind-the-wheel training and the instructor signs it. Practice with a California-licensed supervising driver aged 25 or older, seated close enough to take control if necessary.

Before a minor’s driving test

You must:

  • Be at least 16.
  • Have held a California or other-state instruction permit for at least six months, or have turned 18.
  • Complete driver education and six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training.
  • Complete 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night, with a qualifying California-licensed adult aged 25 or older. Have your parent or guardian sign the permit to certify the practice.

The driver-license application page lists the training requirements. Book the drive test only after meeting the requirements; bring the training certificate and signed permit. See the test-day checklist.

If you are over 17½ but under 18

The permit FAQ allows you to obtain a permit without driver education/driver training certificates. Under that route, you cannot take the driving test until you turn 18. A permit still requires supervised driving.

First-time applicants aged 18 or older

Adults who have never been licensed need an instruction permit, knowledge and vision tests, supervised practice, and a driving test. The teen six-month holding period, DE/DT sequence and 50-hour requirement do not apply. Your supervising driver must have a California license and be at least 18, sitting close enough to take control.

Retakes and application expiration

The testing process allows three attempts to pass the knowledge test before reapplying and paying again. Minors must wait seven days, excluding the failure day, for a knowledge-test retake. For a failed drive test, minors must wait 14 days, excluding the failure day, and pay a retest fee. Three drive-test failures also require a new application.

Your application and nonrefundable fee are valid for 12 months from application, not a fresh year from the day the permit is issued. If you must reapply because the permit expires, the time already held counts toward the six months. Keep both expired and current permits and bring both to the drive test as proof.
