California DMV language help: Chinese and Spanish study and renewal resources
Find Chinese and Spanish handbooks, sample tests, driving-test instructions, free interpreter services and eligible renewal eLearning.
By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study
California DMV provides Chinese and Spanish study materials, a multilingual application, and free interpreter services. Start with the resource that matches your task: applying for a first license, learning driving-test instructions, or renewing a license.
First-license application and knowledge-test preparation
The online driver license/ID application is available in Chinese and Spanish as well as English and other languages. Ask for your knowledge-test language when arranging the office visit; the application’s language is a separate choice from the test format.
For studying:
- The handbook directory offers Chinese and Spanish California Driver’s Handbook PDFs.
- Regular Class C sample tests include four Chinese and four Spanish samples. Chinese links are labeled in Traditional Chinese.
- Additional testing materials include a road-sign chart and Words and Phrases for Class C Driving Test (DL 80) in Chinese, Spanish and other languages.
Study sign shapes, symbols and English wording alongside translations. The DMV sample tests are practice resources; the actual knowledge test is closed to handbooks, phones and other testing aids.
Arrange language assistance before visiting
DMV provides interpreters at no cost. Tell office staff you need one, or call 1-800-777-0133 during business hours and request foreign-language assistance. DMV schedules an appointment when an interpreter is available.
For the driving test, an interpreter can assist with identifying and using controls during the pre-drive inspection, but cannot accompany you during the driving portion. Review the translated DL 80 phrases and the official testing process before the appointment.
Chinese and Spanish renewal eLearning
The current DMV eLearning page lists English, Spanish and Traditional Chinese with Mandarin audio. This self-paced, no-fail course is available to eligible noncommercial Class C renewal applicants. Original-license applicants, commercial applicants, motorcycle renewals and people with both Class C and Class M do not qualify.
If you qualify and your renewal requires a knowledge test, select eLearning during the online renewal application. Completing all modules satisfies that knowledge requirement; you still must finish the renewal process. You cannot select eLearning after processing the application at an office.
For courses already in progress in October 2026: DMV says to finish the current course by November 6, 2026. Otherwise, progress and bookmarks are lost and you must restart on the new platform. Check the linked page for the platform notice before continuing.
