Texas road-test checklist: ITD, documents and your vehicle

Check ITTD or ITAD, the 90-day certificate window, DPS paperwork and vehicle readiness before your Texas driving test.

By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study

A Texas road test needs three things to be ready together: your licensing record, the correct certificates and a safe, legal vehicle. Use the DPS road-test FAQ before booking. DPS says you must apply for a driver license before scheduling the road test, and you must supply a vehicle with valid registration and insurance.

Match ITD to your age and education

Impact Texas Drivers is a separate distracted-driving program. It does not replace driver education or supervised practice. The DPS ITD page describes:

  • ITTD — Impact Texas Teen Drivers: a free two-hour program for applicants aged 15–17 completing approved teen or parent-taught education. Finish the required behind-the-wheel education before taking it.
  • ITAD — Impact Texas Adult Drivers: a free one-hour program for the 18–24 adult-education pathway and for drivers aged 25 or older.

DPS’s ITAD FAQ also says applicants aged 18 or older may complete either ITAD or ITTD. If you are bringing a completed teen-course certificate into the adult licensing pathway, confirm the education documents with your test provider before booking.

The certificate must be presented before the skills test and is valid for 90 days. Print it; the program FAQ requires a paper certificate for DPS or a third-party testing school. If you do not pass within the certificate’s validity period, complete the program again. Check the date after any rescheduling.

Assemble your test-day folder

  • Your valid identification and learner or restricted license, as required for your pathway.
  • Printed ITD completion certificate, still within 90 days.
  • Education completion evidence and other documents required for your application.
  • Current vehicle registration and insurance. You do not have to be named on the policy, but you cannot be an excluded driver.
  • Appointment details and any extra instructions from the testing provider.

For teen provisional applicants, verify the six-month learner-license holding period and completed education and practice. DPS lists seven hours of observation, seven hours driving with the instructor and 30 hours of supervised practice, including at least ten at night. Check parental authorization and any outstanding VOE or graduation evidence too.

Inspect the vehicle before leaving home

The DPS drive-test brochure describes the examiner’s vehicle check. Test the horn, speedometer, signals, brake lights, mirrors, seat belts and doors. Check headlights, taillights and wipers for the expected conditions. Make sure the vehicle’s registration and plates comply with the applicable law; the road-test FAQ allows an out-of-state vehicle that meets its home state’s registration rules.

Texas no longer requires the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles; emissions inspection requirements still apply in designated counties. This does not remove the examiner’s safety check or the need for valid registration.

Rehearse decisions, then confirm the result process

Practice backing straight, parallel parking, turns, intersections, observation, signals and smooth stops. Before moving, adjust the seat and mirrors, buckle up and locate the controls. For a lane change, observe the mirrors and blind spot before moving; for a stop, come to a full stop at the proper place. These habits matter throughout the drive, not only during a named maneuver.

If using an authorized third-party school, confirm its fee, eligibility and result-submission instructions. A sealed paper packet should remain sealed; participating schools may use DPS’s online submission process. Passing the test still needs to be followed by the applicable license-issuance steps.
