Texas knowledge test: official study resources and language options

Find the DPS handbook, understand the 70% pass mark, confirm English or Spanish testing, and turn mistakes into a study plan.

For a regular Texas Class C license, begin with DPS, the driver-licensing agency. TxDMV handles vehicle matters such as titles and registration. The Texas government agency guide separates these services so you can book the correct appointment.

Make the handbook your reference

Download the free Texas Driver Handbook, DL-7. Its examination section specifies 70% or better to pass a knowledge exam. Your education and licensing history determine which exams you need; the application guide is the place to check that pathway.

Study by decisions you must make on the road:

  1. Recognize the instruction: signs, signals and pavement markings.
  2. Decide who moves first: intersections, pedestrians, school buses and emergency vehicles.
  3. Choose a safe maneuver: turning, changing lanes, passing, parking and speed.
  4. Manage risk: following distance, poor visibility, distraction, alcohol and other impaired driving.

After each section, explain one situation without looking at the page. For example, sketch a school bus across a center turn lane and decide whether opposing traffic must stop. Then check the actual rule, rather than memorizing the picture alone.

Choose a study language and a test language separately

DPS’s Testing in Other Languages page says its non-commercial knowledge test is offered in English or Spanish. You must understand road signs written in English. Chinese study support does not mean a Chinese DPS knowledge exam is offered.

A translator may help you communicate with the specialist before and after testing, but may not assist during the knowledge or driving test. Spanish driving-test availability depends on whether a Spanish-speaking specialist is available at the office. Confirm arrangements before booking; commercial-license testing has separate requirements.

DPS also provides a Spanish handbook PDF. Use official licensing pages and the current law for the requirements that apply to your application. For a Chinese study session, keep the English sign wording beside your Chinese explanation so the two stay connected.

Use practice to find the rule you missed

A useful mistake log has three entries: the situation, the rule, and the detail that changes the answer. “Opposite direction” alone is incomplete for a school-bus question; the divider matters. “Emergency vehicle” alone is incomplete; an approaching vehicle and a stopped roadside vehicle call for different actions.

TX Driver is available on Google Play with English, Spanish and Chinese practice. Use it to review mistakes and try mock tests, then return to the source for an unclear rule. Practice questions are study tools, and practice scores do not guarantee an official result.

Before the appointment, confirm whether your approved education course already supplied knowledge-test completion evidence and what documents DPS needs. Our first-license guide helps organize that folder.
