Ohio road test checklist: documents, car and maneuverability

Prepare for Ohio road and maneuverability tests with the right training papers, supervision, vehicle and scoring expectations.

By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study

Ohio’s driving test has two separately evaluated parts: road driving and maneuverability. Prepare your eligibility, car and skills together so that missing paperwork or an unsafe vehicle does not interrupt the appointment.

Confirm eligibility before scheduling

Use the driving-skills scheduling link on the BMV first-issuance page after completing the applicable training and practice. Bring your valid TIPIC. Applicants under 21, and those with a limited-term Non-Renewable/Non-Transferable TIPIC, must bring the completed, notarized BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit, subject to any applicable exemption. Bring your education certificate too; BMV may need it if electronic verification is unavailable.

Under-18 applicants must meet the six-month permit holding requirement. Applicants 18–20 need the approved 24-hour theory/eight-hour instructor course and 50 additional practice hours, including ten at night. The first-license guide explains the age and limited-term paths.

Arrange a licensed driver 21 or older for the trip if you are an adult TIPIC holder; do not drive alone to the exam. Younger permit holders must use the supervisor allowed for their age. Ask the testing location about any accommodation, unusual vehicle or rental arrangement before arrival.

Check the car and carry its papers

BMV requires a vehicle in good condition and inspects it before testing. Know its license plate, make and model. Check the brakes, lights, turn signals, horn, mirrors, tires, seat belts and clear visibility as practical preparation. Adjust the seat and mirrors before moving; locate the defroster and other controls without searching while driving.

Have current vehicle registration and proof of insurance ready. Ohio’s mandatory-insurance page requires coverage for driving and proof at vehicle inspections. Confirm the policy covers you operating the borrowed or rented vehicle. Ask the examiner about camera or assistance-system use; practice direct observation and controlling the car yourself rather than assuming an automated feature can perform the maneuver.

Use a final readiness check

CheckWhat to have ready
ApplicantValid TIPIC, applicable education certificate and notarized practice affidavit
Trip to the testSupervisor permitted for your age; adults need a licensed driver 21+ beside them
VehicleGood condition, plate/make/model, registration and insurance proof
Road skillsObservation, starts/stops, turns, backing, signals, lane position and following distance
ManeuverabilityForward and reverse marker course, controlled stopping position and safe exit

Practice both sections

The road portion assesses starting and stopping, turns, turning around, backing, signals, lane position and following distance. Practice these as complete sequences: observe, decide, signal when needed, move at a controlled speed and continue checking traffic.

For maneuverability, BMV describes a 9-by-20-foot box measured from marker centers:

  1. Drive forward through the box and pass to the examiner’s assigned side of the center marker.
  2. Stop generally parallel to the course, with the rear bumper level with the center marker.
  3. Back past the center marker, straighten and reverse through the box; stop generally parallel, with the bumper level with the two rear markers.
  4. Leave the test area without hitting or running over markers or committing another disqualifying action.

Stopping during the maneuver, bumping a marker, misjudging the stopping point and failing to remain parallel can cost points. Running over, knocking down or moving a marker out of its designated area is an immediate failure. Practice slowly in a legal area with your supervisor; memorized steering turns cannot replace checking the vehicle’s position.

Understand the score and the next step

Under rule 4501:1-1-10, a standard four-wheel applicant must not lose more than 25 points in either part. An acceptable road score cannot cancel a failed maneuverability result or an immediate-failure action.

BMV says applicants under 21 who fail must wait two days to retest. For an initial applicant 21 or older who fails the first road or maneuverability attempt, section 4507.21 provides an abbreviated-training requirement unless qualifying recent training satisfies it. Have BMV review any certificate from the last 12 months. The abbreviated route includes four hours of theory plus either four instructor driving hours or 24 supervised hours; the latter requires BMV 5789 and allows no more than four practice hours per day.

After passing both parts, visit a deputy registrar to purchase the license within 60 days and surrender the TIPIC. Complete issuance before assuming you may drive independently.
