Arizona Permit Test: Questions, Languages and Official Study Resources
Prepare for the 30-question permit test and distinguish at-home teen testing from issuing the actual permit.
By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study
Arizona’s permit knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions, with 80% required to pass: at least 24 correct. Read the Arizona Driver License Manual, then use MVD’s three official practice tests.
Who can test at home?
Arizona teens under 18 can use Permit Test @ Home through a parent or legal guardian’s AZ MVD Now account, or a participating professional driving school. The parent/guardian verifies identity, enters the teen’s information, pays the application fee and supervises the test. This is an official testing path, separate from an online practice quiz.
Applicants must be at least 15½ to obtain an instruction permit. Passing online still requires an office visit with documents and parental approval, a vision test and a photo. The six-month teen holding period starts with office issuance.
Adults should use the office testing path. If you have never held a US driver license, passing the permit test comes before booking a road test.
Test language and road-test language differ
MVD lists written tests in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Korean, Russian, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Arrange your needed language through the testing location. A verbal test may be considered under MVD’s listed conditions and requires an appointment.
The road examiner’s directions are in English. A Mandarin knowledge test does not make the road test a Mandarin test. Practice understanding “stop,” “change lanes left/right” and “turn at the next street” while responding safely, with a qualified supervising driver.
A useful study routine
Study one manual section, answer practice questions, then explain the condition behind every mistake. For example, compare an ordinary center turn lane with a physically divided roadway in the school-bus guide. Do not memorize sample answer positions or treat a short quiz as the entire exam bank.
