Your First Arizona License: Age, Permit and Document Checklist

Separate the teen Class G path from adult licensing, and prepare identity, residency and parental approval documents.

By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study

Arizona driver licensing is handled by ADOT Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Start with your age, licensing history and document type before choosing an appointment.

Choose the right path

  • Ages 15½–17: apply for a Class G instruction permit after the knowledge and vision requirements. Practice with a licensed driver 21 or older seated beside you. A graduated license requires age 16 and a permit held for six months, or reaching age 18. The six-month clock starts when MVD issues the permit in an office, not when you pass the online test.
  • Age 18 or older, never licensed in the US: pass the permit knowledge test before scheduling a road test. The teen six-month holding requirement does not apply to adults.
  • Already licensed elsewhere: use MVD’s transfer instructions; your history may qualify for testing exemptions. Do not assume the first-time path applies.

For teens using the ordinary practice-and-test path, complete 30 supervised hours including ten at night. A 20-hour/six-night-hour option requires completing a qualifying traffic-survival-school course or a Supreme-Court-approved certified defensive-driving-school program; a road test is still required. Separately, an MVD-approved high-school or private driver-education program can provide a road-test waiver, subject to MVD’s 12-month completion-proof requirement. Check the specific conditions before enrolling.

Prepare your documents

Use the current DL/ID checklist: an accepted primary identity document, your Social Security number for verification and two proofs of Arizona residential address. Documents must meet the checklist’s original/certified-copy and English requirements. Arizona also requires proof of authorized US presence. Bring legal name-change evidence when applicable.

Choose Travel ID if you need a REAL ID-compliant credential; the non-travel credential is marked “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION.” The accepted identity documents differ. A teen needs the required parent/guardian approval; if the approver cannot attend, use the notarized application process.

Before leaving home

Check your appointment’s service, collect the originals and save your application details. Passing an at-home test alone does not issue a permit or authorize practice. Review knowledge testing and road-test preparation for the next steps.
