Washington knowledge test: pass mark, languages and a study plan

Prepare for Washington’s 40-question knowledge test, choose a test language, and know what to confirm before booking.

Start with the test you actually need

For a first license with no existing driver license, Washington requires knowledge and drive tests. A valid license from another jurisdiction can change the testing requirement, so check the DOL testing table before paying a testing provider. Washington’s agency is the Department of Licensing, or DOL.

The knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions. You need 32 correct answers to pass. A passing score is valid for two years. Fees vary by testing location, and a failed attempt can involve a waiting period before retesting. Confirm those details when you book.

Match your guide language to your test plan

The official driver-guide page offers English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese editions, along with other languages. The guide’s language list and the test’s language list are different. DOL lists 12 knowledge-test languages, including English, Spanish and both Chinese versions; ask the actual school whether it offers yours.

For example, if you study in Simplified Chinese, ask specifically for the Simplified Chinese knowledge test. Do not assume that a location advertising “Chinese” provides both versions. Keep a small bilingual glossary for concepts such as yield, right-of-way, shoulder and divided highway so you can connect wording to a road situation.

Use a three-pass study routine

  1. Read for decisions. Work through signs, intersections, pedestrians, lane changes, parking and emergencies. After each section, describe what you would do first in one realistic situation.
  2. Explain mistakes. For each practice error, record the rule, the condition that triggers it and the safe action. “Opposite direction on a two-lane road” is more useful than memorizing an answer letter about a school bus.
  3. Practice mixed questions. Try DOL’s short English practice test or Spanish practice test, then return to the guide for anything you cannot explain. Revisit distances and their conditions in the Washington numbers table.

Confirm these details before leaving home

Use the approved training and testing directory to choose a provider. Confirm its address, appointment time, requested ID or WDL number, language, payment, cancellation policy and retest arrangements. A testing appointment and a licensing-office appointment serve different purposes.

Plan for November 1, 2026

As of October 30, 2026, the new course requirement has not yet begun. If you get your first WA driver license on or after November 1, 2026 and are under 25 on that day, DOL requires the free online Work Zone and First Responder Course. The relevant date is when you get the license, rather than when you take the knowledge test. The course is already available and can be taken before or after other required training and tests.

WA Driver is available on Google Play with English, Spanish and Chinese practice and 40-question mock tests. Use practice to identify weak areas, and use the official guide to understand each rule.
