Passing the written knowledge test and obtaining your New York State Learner Permit is just step one. Before you can schedule your road test and receive a driver license, New York State law requires specific steps that surprise many first-time drivers.

Step 1: Obtain your Learner Permit (Age 16+)

Once you pass the 20-question written test and vision screening at the DMV (or online), you receive a temporary learner permit. Your permanent photo permit arrives by mail in about two weeks.

Step 2: Complete the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course (MV-278)

All first-time drivers must complete an approved 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course before scheduling a road test.

  • The course covers highway safety, defensive driving principles, aggressive driving, drug and alcohol laws, and New York traffic regulations.
  • It is offered in person by licensed driving schools and high schools, as well as online by authorized DMV providers.
  • Upon completion, you receive a Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (Form MV-278). If you take an approved high school or college Driver Education course instead, you receive a Student Certificate of Completion (Form MV-285).
  • Important: The MV-278 certificate is valid for one year from the date of issue. You must take your road test before it expires.

Step 3: Log Supervised Driving Practice

  • Drivers under 18: Must wait at least six months from the date your learner permit was issued before taking a road test. You must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving (including at least 15 hours after sunset), certified by a parent or guardian on Form MV-262.
  • Drivers 18 and older: Are not subject to the six-month wait or mandatory hour log, but practicing on highway and city streets is strongly recommended.

Step 4: Schedule and Pass the Road Test

You can book your road test online or by phone using your permit client ID number and your MV-278 certificate number. On the day of your road test, bring:

  1. Your valid New York State photo learner permit.
  2. Your original, valid MV-278 or MV-285 certificate.
  3. Form MV-262 signed by a parent/guardian (if under 18).
  4. A registered, inspected, insured vehicle with a licensed supervising driver age 21 or older.

Paso 3: Horas de práctica supervisada

  • Menores de 18 años: Deben esperar un mínimo de seis meses desde la expedición de su permiso antes de presentar el examen práctico. Deben acumular al menos 50 horas de manejo supervisado (mínimo 15 horas de noche), certificadas en el formulario MV-262.
  • Mayores de 18 años: No tienen el requisito de los 6 meses de espera ni registro obligatorio de horas, pero se recomienda amplia práctica en tráfico real.

Paso 4: Programar y aprobar el examen práctico

Agenda tu cita en el portal del DMV con tu número de permiso y tu certificado MV-278. El día de la prueba lleva:

  1. Tu permiso de aprendizaje con foto vigente.
  2. Tu certificado original MV-278 o MV-285 vigente.
  3. Formulario MV-262 firmado si eres menor de 18.
  4. Un vehículo asegurado, con inspección y registro al día, acompañado por un conductor con licencia de 21 años o más.

第三步：完成陪练与等待期要求

  • 未满 18 岁（青少年初级许可）： 拿到学车许可后必须等待至少 6 个月 才能参加路考！在此期间必须完成至少 50 小时 监督实车驾驶（其中至少 15 小时为夜间驾驶），并由家长或监护人签署 MV-262 监督证明表。

第四步：预约并参加路考

凭学车许可编号和 MV-278 证书编号即可在 DMV 官网预约路考。考试当天必须带齐：

  1. 有效的纽约州带照片学车许可（Photo Learner Permit）。
  2. 有效期内的 MV-278 证书原件。
  3. 未满 18 岁需带家长签字的 MV-262 陪练确认表。
