How many questions are on the New Jersey MVC knowledge test?

The New Jersey Driver Manual describes a knowledge test of 50 questions, plus a survey question about organ donation that does not count toward your score. You must answer 40 of the 50 scored questions correctly (80%). Practice the full 50-question length so the real exam does not feel longer than your drills.

What score do I need to pass?

You need 80 percent: 40 correct answers out of 50 scored questions. You can miss up to 10 scored questions and still pass.

Can I take the New Jersey knowledge test in Chinese or Spanish?

Yes. The MVC knowledge test is available in English, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin), and other languages; the driver manual also lists American Sign Language (ASL). Oral tests are available in English and Spanish. If your language is not offered, ask MVC about a state-approved interpreter and its scheduling requirements before your test.

How old do I need to be for a New Jersey permit?

At 16, you can obtain a special learner’s permit through an approved behind-the-wheel course, with parent or guardian consent. At 17 or older, you can obtain an examination permit. First-time drivers under 21 need at least six months of supervised practice. If the permit was issued on or after February 1, 2025 while under 21, complete 50 hours including 10 during darkness; the adult GDL route starts at 21 and requires at least three months of supervised practice. After passing the road test, both routes require one year with a probationary license before upgrading to a basic license.

What happens if I fail the knowledge test?

You must wait seven days before retaking the knowledge test. Review the topics you missed and schedule another knowledge-test appointment through MVC. Bring your permit and the required identification to the appointment.

Which New Jersey GDL rules should I study?

Study GDL restrictions carefully. Permit and probationary drivers under 21 must display red reflective decals and follow passenger limits and the 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. driving restriction. Documented employment or religious needs can qualify for an exemption to the night-driving rule. The ban on handheld and hands-free cell phones and other electronic devices applies to permit and probationary drivers of every age. At 21, the hour, passenger and decal restrictions end; the device ban continues until you upgrade to a basic license.

Can I take the New Jersey knowledge test online?

No. The MVC knowledge test is taken in person. For a test at an MVC driver testing center, first purchase an examination permit, then schedule a knowledge-test appointment. Approved school programs may also administer the test. An online practice test does not replace the official exam.

What should I bring to the MVC?

For an initial permit appointment, bring 6 Points of ID for age and identity, New Jersey address proof, the required SSN, ITIN or qualifying affidavit documentation, and form BA-208. A standard license accepts an SSN, ITIN or qualifying affidavit and one address proof; REAL ID requires SSN proof and two address proofs. Identity documents must be paper or hard copy; address proofs may be electronic. Applicants under 18 need parent or guardian consent. For a later knowledge-test appointment, also bring your permit and the required ID. Use the official document selector to check acceptable documents.

Is NJ Driver free? Does it replace the official manual?

This website is free. NJ Driver is free to download and includes offline practice, some free explanations, and 5 free mock tests. Membership removes ads and unlocks all explanations and related handbook links, plus unlimited mock tests. Handbook downloads need internet access. Use New Jersey Driver Manual for the rules and requirements; the app is an independent study tool.
