New Jersey has an MVC, not a DMV

Find the official New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, its driver manual, knowledge-test appointments and first-license requirements.

New Jersey’s driver licensing agency is the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). You may hear people say “New Jersey DMV,” but MVC is the name to look for when finding official services and study material.

Start with the correct agency

The MVC knowledge-test page explains how to purchase an examination permit and then schedule the test. The official manuals page provides the New Jersey Driver Manual and available translations.

A practice site’s use of the familiar word “DMV” does not by itself tell you whether its rules are accurate. Check the actual content against MVC sources: the test format, permit stages and New Jersey road rules.

Learn the permit names

The GDL program has different entry routes. A special learner permit is available starting at 16 through an approved behind-the-wheel training course; an approved instructor purchases the permit. An examination permit is available starting at 17, with supervised practice and other requirements before the road test. The minimum age is only one part of eligibility.

Check the first-license guide and the manual for the route that applies to you. Do not treat a permit, probationary license and basic license as interchangeable.

Study the New Jersey requirements

The general knowledge test has 50 questions, with 40 correct answers required to pass. The manual also describes an additional organ-donation survey question. GDL plate decals, passenger limits, driving hours and device restrictions have specific conditions; review them in the GDL guide.
