New Jersey MVC permit test: 20 points to review

Use these 20 items to organize New Jersey passenger-car permit preparation. Use the official manual to explain each answer and check any gaps before your test.

Test and study material

1. The agency is MVC, the Motor Vehicle Commission.
2. The official general knowledge test has 50 questions; 40 correct answers are required to pass.
3. Official sample questions illustrate study material; they are not the full exam bank.
4. Use the current NJ Driver Manual, not another state’s rules.
5. MVC lists written tests in 13 languages, including Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
6. Oral tests are offered in English and Spanish; confirm any required arrangement in advance.

Application and licensing stages

7. Obtaining the permit and booking a knowledge-test appointment are separate steps.
8. Prepare the official identity-document requirements; do not confuse 6 Points of ID with driving-record points.
9. Check address, Social Security and application requirements separately from identity points.
10. Passing the knowledge test does not by itself authorize unrestricted solo driving.
11. Check your permit category and the supervising driver’s qualifications before practice.
12. If your special learner or examination permit was issued on or after February 1, 2025 while you were under 21, complete at least 50 supervised hours, including 10 during darkness, and submit BA-CSD at probationary licensure. Turning 21 before licensure does not remove this requirement.
13. Passenger, night-driving and decal restrictions have age and stage conditions. The GDL device ban also applies to permit and probationary drivers aged 21 and older. See the GDL guide.

Road rules and conditions

14. An ordinary right turn on red requires a complete stop and yielding, and must not be prohibited. See the NJ red-light guide.
15. NO TURN ON RED prohibits the turn; STOP HERE ON RED identifies the stopping position.
16. For the ordinary school-bus situation with flashing red lights, stop at least 25 feet away.
17. Painted center lines alone do not create a raised-median exception.
18. Opposing traffic across a safety island or raised median has the manual’s 10 mph instruction.
19. For the school-front exception, the bus must receive or discharge passengers directly at the school on the same side of the street. Read the complete conditions in the school-bus guide.
20. Keep each number with its purpose and conditions: a speed, a distance and a practice-hour requirement are not interchangeable.
