Georgia first license: documents and the teen or adult path

Prepare a Georgia Class CP, D or C application with identity, residency, school and training documents suited to your age.

By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study

Start by choosing the license you are applying for. A Georgia Class CP learner’s permit allows supervised practice, Class D is the provisional license for drivers 16–17, and Class C is the usual adult passenger-vehicle license. The folder you need changes as you move between these steps.

Choose your next step

You may apply for Class CP from age 15. After passing the knowledge and vision exams, you may drive only with a person 21 or older, licensed for a Class C vehicle, seated beside you and capable of taking control. A permit does not authorize solo practice. Start with the DDS learner’s permit requirements.

For the ordinary Class D path at 16 or 17, hold a valid learner’s permit for one year and one day, complete Joshua’s Law education and supervised experience, complete ADAP or eADAP, and pass the road test. Major violations that suspended the permit can prevent eligibility. Transferred out-of-state permit time can count toward the holding period; transfer that permit to Georgia. See the Class D requirements before choosing an appointment date.

At 18 or older, use the Class C application. A first license still requires knowledge, vision and road testing. DDS’s adult road-test checklist requires a valid Georgia non-commercial learner’s permit and an affidavit confirming 40 supervised hours, including six at night. Waiting until 18 does not replace driving practice. Existing license holders should check transfer or upgrade requirements rather than assume they must repeat the first-license process.

Build one document folder

Use the acceptable-document list for your application, checking names and dates before visiting:

  • Identity and citizenship or lawful presence: for example, an unexpired U.S. passport or a qualifying original/certified birth certificate for a U.S. citizen. Noncitizens should use DDS’s immigration-document table for their status.
  • Legal name changes: bring the required chain of supporting documents when your current name differs from the identity document.
  • Two Georgia residence documents: these must come from separate sources or accounts and show the current residential address. Check each category’s date requirement; a post-office box is insufficient.
  • Social Security information: enter your full SSN on the application. DDS may request supporting proof if electronic verification fails. Noncitizens not authorized to work should follow the separate SSN denial-notice instructions.

DDS requires documents in English and says it does not accept translated documents. Resolve an unusual identity or immigration-document situation with DDS before the visit rather than buying a translation and assuming it will qualify.

Add the teen-specific papers

Applicants under 18 need accepted school-enrollment or completion evidence and an authorized adult to sign the application. The DDS list includes school transcripts, current school ID and other alternatives; homeschool and graduates have their own options.

For Class D, keep the driver-education certificate and ADAP/eADAP certificate separate. Under Joshua’s Law, 16- and 17-year-olds complete 30 hours of approved classroom or virtual instruction, plus an approved practical-training route. The certified-school practical route includes six hours behind the wheel at the school plus 40 supervised hours, six at night. Alternatively, use the DDS Parent/Teen Driving Guide for the 40-hour parent-taught route, including the required nighttime experience. Select a complete approved method so that both theory and practical training are covered.

Complete the online application before your visit, then arrange the relevant testing. Continue with the knowledge-test resources and road-test checklist.
