Florida Class E knowledge test: official resources and a study plan

Understand the 50-question exam, approved testing options and English-only testing, then turn handbook reading into practical recall.

By the US DMV editorial team · Passenger-car permit study

The Florida Class E knowledge exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 40 correct answers, or 80%, to pass. It covers traffic laws, safe driving and traffic controls. Use that scope to organize your preparation instead of memorizing an unexplained list of answers.

Start with the official handbook and practice test

The FLHSMV Class E exam guide links the official handbook, Class E Knowledge Practice Test and testing options. Use the handbooks page as your reference when a practice explanation seems unclear.

Read a manageable section, close it, and write the action you would take. For a right-of-way situation, identify the traffic control, who has to yield and when you may proceed. For a sign, connect its shape and message to the action it requires. For a numerical rule, record the condition alongside the number: a speed or distance without its situation is easy to misuse.

Prepare for an English exam

Florida’s current knowledge and driving-skills examinations are in English. FLHSMV’s statewide testing announcement establishes English-only testing from February 6, 2026 and removes language-translation services for the exams. Contact your provider separately about disability accommodations.

If you learn in Spanish or Chinese, use that language to understand the rule, then repeat it using the English terms on signs and in directions. Build a small glossary around words such as yield, shoulder, median, merge and right-of-way. Read the whole scenario before answering; a single condition such as “opposite direction” can change the rule.

Choose an eligible testing route

Applicants under 18 may take the knowledge exam online through an approved third-party administrator. The required Parent Proctoring Form must be notarized or signed before a driver license examiner. Adult applicants should arrange an eligible in-person test. FLHSMV also describes school-based DELAP testing; participating schools can explain their services.

Use the official exam provider list to check authorization before paying. Passing through a third party does not eliminate the possibility of a mandatory random retest at a driver license or tax collector office. Course completion, the exam and license issuance are separate steps; use the first-license guide to keep them organized.

Make practice reveal what to study next

  1. Do a short set without looking up answers.
  2. For each mistake, label the cause: unknown rule, missed condition, English vocabulary or rushed reading.
  3. Find the relevant handbook section and explain the rule with a different example.
  4. Try a mixed set later, after the original answer is no longer fresh in your memory.

FL Driver supports English, Spanish and Chinese study, mistake review and mock tests. Use it alongside official materials. Your practice score is a study signal, not a guaranteed result or a replacement for the official exam. Book when you can explain the rules behind your choices and have checked the appointment and document requirements.
